The names of some legendary Pokémon include Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres. These three legendary bird Pokémon can each manipulate a different element. Articuno can influence ice, Zapdos can manipulate lighting, and Moltres controls fire. Another legendary Pokémon, Zygarde, lives deep underground in the Kalos region.
Articuno freezes the water particles in the air to create blizzards. It is said that its wings are made of ice because of its their crystal-like appearance. The wings of Zapdos can make lighting showers and generate strong storms. Moltres not only controls fire but can also recover using fire. When the legendary bird is injured, it dives into magma to heal its wounds.
In “Pokémon X” and “Pokémon Y,” catching Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres differs from catching traditional Pokémon. While these Pokémon are still found in tall grass in the Kalos region, they flee immediately after encountering them. To catch these Pokémon, players have to encounter and make the Pokémon flee 11 times. Once they meet this condition, the legendary Pokémon shows up at the Sea Spirit's Den located in Azure Bay. After arriving at the bay, players finally get a chance to catch the legendary Pokémon.
These three legendary bird Pokémon randomly appear in different places all over Kalos. Once players encounter one, the Pokémon is added to their Pokedex. They can check their Pokedex to see where the Pokémon currently is at any given time.
