Although paper formulated for laser or inkjet printers can be adequate, the best paper for printing pictures is photographic paper. Photographic paper is coated with a light-sensitive chemical formula and is thicker, brighter and more opaque than plain paper and laser- or inkjet-specific paper.
Photographic paper allows the ink dye or pigment to properly permeate the paper and reduces the likelihood of ink leeching, spreading or blurring. It can also keep pictures printed on it from fading, discoloring or suffering from ozone damage. Photographic paper is far superior to standard copy paper, which can make printed pictures appear chalky, flat and lifeless. Standard copy paper also reduces the perceptible level of detail in the picture.
