American Pharaoh won the 2015 Kentucky Derby by one length and was the first horse to achieve the Triple Crown since 1978. Barbaro won the 2006 Kentucky Derby by six lengths but suffered a life-threatening injury during the Preakness Stakes, the race following the Derby, before requiring euthanization. Affirmed won the 1978 Kentucky Derby and was the last horse to achieve the Triple Crown before American Pharaoh. Secretariat, considered one of the greatest horses in racing history, won the 1973 Kentucky Derby and Triple Crown in 1:59.4, which is the fastest time ever recorded as of the 2015 Derby. Sir Barton won the 1919 Kentucky Derby and was the first horse to ever complete the Triple Crown.
Giacomo, winner of the 2005 Kentucky Derby, offered 50.3:1 odds, the longest odds of any Derby winner between 1960 and 2015. Mine That Bird, winner of the 2009 Kentucky Derby, won by 6 3/4 lengths, the widest margin of any winner between 1960 and 2015. Monarchos, winner of the 2001 Kentucky Derby, is the only horse besides Secretariat to finish the Derby in under two minutes. Seattle Slew won the 1977 Kentucky Derby as well as the Triple Crown, joining Affirmed and Secretariat as the three horses to do so in the 1970s.
