Shuffle and place the 28 tiles face down to form the boneyard. Each player then draws seven tiles, and the remaining tiles go unused. Once the players start drawing tiles, they are placed on an edge, allowing each player to view his tiles but not the tiles of their opponents.
Players are allowed to see how many tiles remain in each opponents' hands at all times during the game. The game starts when a player places the first tile down. The first-played tile begins the line of play.
After the first tile is drawn, the players alternately extend the line of play with one tile at one of the two ends of the line. The game concludes when a player uses his last tile or when the line is blocked because there are no extensions available. If a block occurs, whoever caused the block gets all of the remaining player points.
