As with most video game consoles, the Playstation 2 was a collaborative effort involving hundreds of people at its parent company, Sony. However, former Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Ken Kutaragi was the lead developer, and he has been called "the father of the Playstation."
Ken Kutaragi did the research and design for the original Playstation (which was initially meant to be a CD-ROM add-on for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System). He went on to lead the development of both the Playstation 2 and the Playstation 3. Kutaragi's success with these consoles led to his promotion to President of Sony Computer Entertainment in 2003.
