To dye clothing with RIT dye, prewash the clothing item, prepare the dye, mix the dye with water, stir or agitate the clothing in the dye, rinse the item, wash the item and dry it. Instructions vary slightly depending on whether a sink or washing machine is used.
- Prepare to dye
Prewash the clothing to be dyed to ensure an even color result. Weigh the items to determine the amount of dye to use as directed on packaging. If using the sink or a bucket, spread plastic around the work area to prevent stains.
- Add water and dye
Fill the sink, bucket or washing machine with hot water. Wearing rubber gloves, add dye. Liquid dye can be added directly to water, while powdered dye must be dissolved in 2 cups of hot water, then poured into water.
- Stir or agitate the dye solution
Use the washing machine's "agitate" setting to mix the water and dye. Add clothing to mixture. Dye clothes for 30 to 60 minutes. It may be necessary to restart the cycle before rinsing to achieve the desired color. For the sink or bucket method, stir constantly for 10 to 30 minutes until the desired color level is reached. Stir in all directions to prevent uneven dying.
- Rinse and wash
Once the optimal color has been achieved, rinse the clothes in warm water. Gradually add cooler water until the rinse water runs clear. Wash in warm water with mild detergent and dry.
