Create do-it-yourself Mod Podge with flour, sugar, cooking oil and water. These ingredients are easily crafted into a Mod Podge style mixture using common kitchen tools.
To make home made Mod Podge, gather 1 1/2 cups of flour, 1/4 cup granulated sugar, 1/4 teaspoon of vegetable oil and 1 cup of water. For tools, use a stove top, saucepan, spoon and a mason jar or airtight container.
Place the saucepan on low to medium heat, and then add the flour, sugar, water and oil. Continue to add flour and water until the mixture attains the desired consistency. For a more intense varnish, add more oil. Stir the mixture constantly for 5-10 minutes, taking care not to allow it to boil. Pour it into the mason jar or airtight container, and allow it to cool to room temperature before sealing.
Other methods of making Mod Podge include a white glue-based recipe, mixing with water and varnish to create a mix that's customizable with food coloring and glitter for a more decorative look.
To use the Mod Podge, coat the surface of a decoration with the mixture. Apply paper or fabric decoration, smoothing it down to eliminate bubbles or wrinkles. Apply another thin layer of Mod Podge, and allow the piece to dry. Apply another coating if needed.
