Homemade modeling dough recipes contain salt, water, oil, flour and other basics like cornstarch, baking soda and food coloring. A very basic recipe calls for flour, salt, cream of tartar, vegetable oil and water combined together and heated in a large pot until a large dough ball forms.
The ingredients to make homemade play dough are easy to find and simple to customize. Some ingredient combinations may include peanut butter, honey or other flavors and are intended to be eaten. Most play dough recipes are not meant to be eaten but to be played with and then stored for long periods of time and reused. Certain ingredient combinations require cooking and some versions are simply mixed together in a bowl or on a table and are played with right away. If a wheat free combination is desired, a similar product can be made using corn starch, baking soda and water. The food coloring used for baking, colored drink mix powders or non-toxic tempera powders are the items most often used to add color to homemade dough. The toy company Hasbro does not reveal every ingredient in the modeling compound they produce called Play-Doh, but it is known that the product mainly consists of flour, water and salt.
