What Is Some Information About the 2005 Buffalo Nickel Recall?

Made in commemoration of the bicentennial of Lewis and Clark expedition, one of the 2005 Westward Journey Nickel series depicts a buffalo on the back of the Jefferson Nickel. The President ordered the change and the buffalo represents the wildlife and the American Indians that Lewis and Clark encountered.

In 2006, Thomas Jefferson and his home, Monticello, returned to the 5 cent piece, ending the enactment of Public Law 108-15. The special editions included the buffalo, the Pacific Ocean and an inscription wrote by Captain William Clark, and a contemporary image of President Jefferson with “Liberty” written to look like his script.
