To make microwavable salt dough, combine 1 cup salt, 2 cups all-purpose flour and 1 cup water, and knead the dough until it is smooth and pliable, adding more flour as needed if the dough is sticky. Cut the dough into the desired shapes, and microwave it for 2 1/2 minutes, or until the dough is firm and dry. Paint the shapes as desired.
Alternately, combine 1 cup salt and 2 cup all-purpose flour with up to 1 cup water, and knead the dough until it is smooth. Cut the dough into the desired shapes, and bake at 200 degrees Fahrenheit until the dough is dry. Do not allow the shapes to turn brown or burn while baking them. Paint the shapes after they cool.
To make colored dough, add powdered tempura paint, food coloring or natural dyes, such as curry spice, to the dough while kneading it. To make scented salt dough, add 5 to 10 drops essential oil, such as peppermint or lavender essential oil, to the dough. Use caution when working with essential oils, as these concentrated oils can cause skin irritation.
To add both scent and color, add powdered spices, such as cinnamon or ground nutmeg, and food coloring to the dough. Make a hole in the shape before baking it to hang it with a ribbon after decorating it.
