Some popular and well-reviewed horror games for the PC include "Alien: Isolation," the "Dead Space" series and the "Five Nights at Freddy's" series. All of these games are available through digital download services such as Steam.
"Alien: Isolation" was published by Sega in 2014. The game takes place in the universe of Ridley Scott's "Alien" movies prior to the second film. The player takes on the role of Amanda Ripley, daughter of film protagonist Ellen Ripley, as she searches for her missing mother. The game is designed as a first-person shooter, but with a heavy emphasis on stealth and management of limited resources as the player is hunted by the much more powerful Alien.
The "Dead Space" games are also first-person shooters, but with a more heavily armed and armored protagonist. Though the games feature more action, they still emphasize horror with a focus on unsettling atmosphere and "jump scare" appearances by the enemies. The first "Dead Space" game was released in 2008, and there have since been sequels. The series is published by Electronic Arts.
The "Five Nights at Freddy's" games also focus on "jump scares" but have a much different setting. Players take the role of an overnight security guard who must defend himself from murderous animatronics using a security system that only has limited power.
