Some beginner paper piecing templates are a diamond star paper pieced block pattern, paper pieced feather quilt block pattern and mariner's star pillow pattern. Other templates suitable for beginners at foundation paper piecing quilting are the love pattern and the beginner's tutorial, the latter of which is a simple tree and house pattern.
The beginner's tutorial includes a pattern and instructions on making a 6-inch house and pine block that uses only 13 pieces. The block can be part of a larger piece or made into a wall hanging.
The love paper piecing template is a 3-inch square block that combines both uppercase and lowercase letters. The template can also be made into a rectangular block with all the letters in a row as opposed to the square arrangement.
Another small project, the mariner's star pillow pattern, uses a simple template that is quadrupled and connected into a square. It requires 12 red squares of different sizes, eight light green squares, eight dark green squares, four green squares of different sizes and 18 white squares of different sizes. The red pieces form the background, and the green and white pieces are for the star.
The paper pieced feather quilt block pattern uses strips of scrap material to form a fishtail. The diamond star paper pieced block pattern is similar to the star pillow pattern, but with four instead of eight points and fewer pieces of material.
