The first reported sighting of an instrument like a banjo was in 1620 in Gambia. It was African slaves that first brought the instrument to America. The instrument caught the public’s eye when they were featured as part of minstrel shows in the 1820s and popularity spread even further with the popularity of radio in the 1920s and 30s. However, the banjo was surpassed by the guitar in popularity sometime during World War II.
