Fun art projects using recycled Advent calendars include making holiday themed place mats using calendar cut outs. This project requires half-sheet paper towels, clear contact paper, scissors and any Advent calendar.
Children choose which pages and pictures to cut out of the Advent calendar to use on their place mats. The illustrations can be themed, such as snowmen and mittens for making a milk and cookies holiday place mat. The children or parents then cut a piece of self-adhesive vinyl contact paper slightly larger than the half-sheet paper towel, and then gather their cut out pictures. With the cut-outs, children arrange a design on the paper towel, being sure to leave a half-inch of space around the edge. With the adhesive back exposed, the parent lines up the contact paper with the edges of the paper towel, pressing and smoothing it as he places it down.
Options for this craft project include making a double-sided place mat by choosing recycled photos or illustrations from the Advent calendar to adhere to the opposite side with contact paper. Crafters can double the layers of contact paper for a more durable place mat. The project concludes by trimming all excess edges of contact paper away to line up with the paper towel.
