Making an origami crane involves folding a perfectly square piece of paper many times to create a tail, wings and beak. A simple origami crane takes only half an hour or less to make.
- Fold into triangles
Lay the square paper in front of you so that one tip is pointing towards you. Fold the paper in half to create a triangle, unfold and fold in the other direction to create another triangle. Unfold the paper.
- Fold into rectangles
Fold the paper in half to create a rectangle. Repeat in the other direction.
- Create a smaller square
Place the paper with one tip pointing towards you. Take the two side points and fold them on the creases, pulling them so their points meet on the point that is facing you.
- Fold into smaller triangles
Fold the top layer of the left and right points so they meet in the center of the square. Fold the top point towards you. Repeat these folds on the other side and unfold all folds.
- Fold into a long diamond
Take the top layer and fold it back along the top fold. Repeat this on the other side. Fold the top layer of the left and right points towards the center. Repeat on the other side. Fold the right side over the left side. Turn over and fold the right over the left side. Flatten the paper.
- Create the wings
With the longest points pointing towards you, fold the top layer up on the horizontal crease so it points away from you. Repeat on the other side. Fold the right side over the left side. Turn over and fold the right over the left side. Fold the pentagon down and repeat on the other side to form the wings.
- Finish the crane
Pull the long triangles apart for the body. Fold the tip of one triangle down to create the beak.
