What Was the First Online Trading Card Game?

Introduced in 1997, Sanctum and Chron X were the first trading card games on the Internet. Although Digital Addiction, the original production company for Sanctum, closed its doors in 2000, the game remained functioning until 2010. Offline for two years, it returned in 2012 and continues into 2015.

As of 2015, Chron X is playable online. Originally developed by Genetic Anomalies, Inc, it continues to feature new expansions. The first game designer for the series was George Moromisato, with proceeding cards designed by Andrea Shubert, Dan Collins and Ian Schreiber.

Sanctum has offered several new elements throughout the years, including game boards, sound effects and animations for some of the trading cards.
