To make the Mad River Mittens, you need one set of 10-millimeter double-point and one set of 6-millimeter double-point needles, stitch markers, a split ring marker or safety pin, waste yarn and a tapestry needle. You also need a sewing needle and thread and two buttons.
Use the larger knitting needles and cast on either 28 or 34 stitches, depending on the desired size. Divide the stitches evenly amongst the two needles and join them together to begin working in rounds. After you complete a few rounds, use a stitch marker to designate the beginning of the round, and knit 10 rounds.
The next step is to create the thumb gusset, followed by the shaping of the top of the mitten and the entire thumb. Then, create the loop to the desired length. Fasten off the yarn and weave in the ends. To felt the mittens, wash the mittens in hot water with a heavy article of clothing, such as jeans. Stretch the mittens to the desired size and shape and lay flat to dry. Finally, sew on the buttons.Learn more about Crafting
