Professional appraisers and dealers are experts who can determine the worth of a coin collection. Collectors can find appraisal services and dealers near them by searching the American Society of Appraisers, the International Society of Appraisers, American Numismatic Association, Professional Numismatists Guild's Dealer or Professional Currency Dealer Association directories.
There are usually four different values that dealers and appraisers use to price coin collections. The first is the book value, which is the average retail price of a coin; this is the price that a dealer can sell a coin for and does not necessarily represent the price that a collector will receive. The second is the buy price, which is the price that a collector can expect to receive. The retail price describes the selling price for a specific coin, rather than the average quoted in the book price. Finally, the wholesale price reflects the price for large quantities of coins or the price that a dealer would accept from another dealer.
