There are many dress-up dolls marketed to little girls, but three of the most popular are American Girl, Barbie and Polly Pocket. Though each of these companies also markets to parents, their websites, and in the case of American Girl, magazine publications, are marketed to girls.
American Girl makes 18-inch dolls that look like girls of about 12. Though many of their dolls represent girls living in different periods of American history, they can be custom ordered to look like any girl, with a wide variety of custom options. The company offers many different dress-up options, including American historical outfits and current fashions.
Barbie dolls are 11.5 inches tall and designed to look like women. Barbie has one of the widest varieties of dress-up options, including career looks, such as astronaut, artist and politician. Barbie also comes in several mythological varieties, such as mermaid and fairy.
Polly Pockets are the smallest, at 2 to 3 inches tall. Named for its diminutive size, Polly Pockets are made to look like women. The clothes for these dolls are made of a material similar to rubber, which may be frustrating for younger girls with limited motor skills. However, the choices of tiny clothes and outfits for Polly Pockets are highly varied.
