Crepe or crape (its English translation) material is made with either silk, wool or fabric consisting of synthetic fibers. It has a distinctive crisp and crimped appearance. Crape also refers to a type of fabric associated with mourning.
There are dozens of types of crape material with names such as French crepe, health crepe and reverse crepe. There are two general types of crepe material: soft and hard. Soft crepes are known as canon or Oriental crepes. Hard crepes are also known as crisped crepe. The manufacture of some types of hard crepe material had been a closely guarded secret with some Chinese manufacturers completing different steps in production in different towns to ensure secrecy. Crepe material was popular at the beginning of the twentieth century and remains popular today.
