Some cool things to make at home are beer and wine, a vegetable and herb garden, earth-friendly cleaning supplies, natural cosmetics and hair treatments, body lotion, bubble bath, toys and finger paints. Some homemade foods that can be made from scratch are bread, peanut butter, granola, biscotti, salsa, guacamole, hummus, soft pretzels, spaghetti sauce, pasta, potato chips, ice cream, baby food and dog treats.
Some fun do-it-yourself projects for children include making beaded wind chimes, paper lanterns, decorated picture frames, musical instruments out of common household items and specialty kits that include interesting or unique toys, books, crayons, magnets and other supplies.
Homemade clay also provides a vehicle for creative play. Clay ingredients include 2 cups of water, 2 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1/2 cup of salt, 1 tablespoon of cream of tartar, 2 1/2 tablespoons of cooking oil and food coloring. Mix all of the dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Bring the water to a boil in a sauce pan, then remove the pan from the heat. Add the oil and, if desired, a few drops of food coloring. Blend the liquid and dry ingredients, and knead the mixture until dough begins to form. Continue kneading until smooth. Store the clay in an air-tight container for maximum freshness.
