Common musical instruments include the piano, violin, flute, guitar and drums. The clarinet, cello, keyboard, saxophone, bass guitar and trumpet are also common musical instruments played by students and professional musicians.
Most common musical instruments fall into one of the major instrument families. The woodwind family includes instruments which are played by blowing air through them, such as the flute, clarinet and saxophone. The violin, cello, guitar and double bass belong to the string family. The brass family includes trumpets, trombones and tubas.The piano, snare drum, xylophone and cymbals are all members of the percussion family. The piano is also sometimes included in the keyboard family, which similarly encompasses the pipe organ and accordion. Electronic instruments are sometimes placed into their own family as well.
