Characters that appear in the game series "Super Smash Bros.," usually consist of characters that have appeared in franchises found on Nintendo consoles, such as Mario, Luigi, Samus and Fox Mc.Cloud. However, after the release of "Super Smash Brothers Brawl," the lineup included third-party characters such as Solid Snake.
In the first game, titled "Super Smash Bros.," only 12 characters were available and included not only well-known characters, but more obscure characters such as Ness from the "Mother" series of games. The game received a larger cast for its next installment, titled "Super Smash Bros. Melee." Several of Nintendo's staple characters returned, including Mario, Luigi, Captain Falcon, Link and Pikachu. However, the lineup expanded to a total of 26 characters and included several famous villains from some of Nintendo's most popular game franchises, such as Gannondorf from "The Legend of Zelda" and Bowser from "Super Mario World."
The next installment in the series, "Super Smash Bros. Brawl," further expanded the available characters and included a character not owned by Nintendo, Solid Snake. The game would go on to later reveal its second third-party character, Sonic the Hedgehog. Finally, in its latest release, "Super Smash Bros. for Wii-U and Nintendo 3DS," the trend of including third-party characters continued with the inclusion of both Mega Man and Pac-Man. As of 2015, this game also has the largest number of characters at 53.
