Model ship kits include instructions and tools, such as wood, sandpaper or a sand block, a wooden stick and sheet cork. Follow these instructions to create a model sailboat.
Step 1: Saw the wood into the desired dimensions
Using a carpenter saw or bandsaw, saw the wood into desired dimensions to scale, such as 3/4 inches thick, 2 1/2 inches wide and 7 inches long. Smooth out the wood using sandpaper or sand block.
Step 2: Create the mast
Cut or saw a thin piece of wood 6 inches long. Drill a hole into the wood for the mast to go through.
Step 3: Create the sail
Cut sheet cork or heavy wrapping paper into a square. Use a hole punch to create holes in the sail for the mast.
Step 4: Waterproofing
To waterproof the boat, color the hull and the sail with crayon.
Other model boats, such as tugboats and freighters, can be made of plastic or other wood. Remote-controlled boats are a more advanced option for model ship builders. Carving designs into the wood can add intricate details to model ships.Learn more about Pottery & Ceramics
