Both professional and amateur photographers can sell their pictures on stock photo websites such as iStockphoto or Stockxpert, as well as directly through a personal website. Photo printing services such as Shutterfly also offer full-service printing and sales solutions for a subscription fee.
To sell photos through iStockphoto, users much first sing up for a free account through the website. This allows users to apply for posting approval from the iStockphoto staff. As of 2015, the application process consists of reading the site's quality standards and guidelines along with answering a short quiz based on the information. After passing the quiz, applicants must submit three of their best photographs to the site for evaluation. If the photographs meet the iStockphoto standards, users are allows to upload and sell a variety of photos on the site in exchange for up to 40 percent of the profits from all downloads of the photos.
Selling photos through Shutterflys Pro Gallery program requires users to sing up for an annual contract in one of two service levels. Once the account is paid for, users can upload photos to the site and create a unique gallery storefront. All purchased photos are printed and shipped by Shutterfly.
