Can You Play "The Sims" Online Without Downloading Anything?

"The Sims Online" was released in 2002, and it charged a monthly fee of $9.99 per month, making it possible to play "The Sims" online without downloading anything. However, four weeks after the game was rebranded as EA-Land in 2008, the server was shut down permanently .

In 2008, after the rebranding of "The Sims Online," some developers chose to leave and start a clone of the online game named "TirNua." This game, which promotes ecology, was still online in 2014 as a browser-based, free-to-play game. A revival game named "The Sims Social" was released Aug. 9, 2011, but it was shut down in 2013 due to lack of activity on the site. As of August 2014, Electronic Arts offered "The Sims 3" packs and bundles on its website and promoted the launch of "The Sims 4," scheduled for release in September 2014.
