To open a Sony PlayStation 3, or PS3, unscrew the screws on the bottom of the console, remove the hard drive and lift off the top. PS3 owners should know that in most cases, taking apart the console may void the warranty.
A PS3 owner may want to open the machine for cleaning or troubleshooting. To do this, he or she will need a Philips head screwdriver and a sharp craft knife.
Step 1: Locate and remove the rubber feet
Turn the PS3 over so the bottom is facing up. Place it on a soft towel to avoid scratching the surface. Depending on the model, there may be as many as eight rubber feet. Use the knife to remove them, which will expose the screws holding the console together.
Step 2: Remove the screws
Use the screwdriver to remove all of the screws. Place them in a small dish or plastic baggie to ensure none are lost. Use the metal pull tab to remove the hard drive and set that aside as well.
Step 3: Remove the cover
Once all of the screws have been removed, carefully turn the PS3 right-side up. Lift the top of the unit off to expose the internal components. To put the machine back together, simply repeat these steps in reverse order.
