Reborn Berenguer dolls can be purchased online on auction sites such as eBay.com or on specialty sites like RebornDollMart.com. Depending on the work put into "reborning" the doll, the price can be around $50 or up to $250, as of 2015.
Reborning dolls is the process by which artists make baby dolls look like real children. The practice began in the late 1980s and has continued to today. At first the artists started with porcelain dolls, but soon vinyl Berenguer dolls became popular in the United States because their faces and hands were already quite realistic. Currently most reborn dolls start with that vinyl base, but most of the features created by the factory are removed to make room for the reborning artist's work. The hair and blushing are removed using paint stripper or acetone, and the eyes and molded hair lines are removed. The dolls are then repainted with high quality paints and are given more realistic eyes, hair and eyelashes. Although many artists still start with Berenguer bases today, manufacturers now produce reborning kits that include blank vinyl doll parts ready for painting so the artist does not have to go through the trouble of removing factory designs.
