Horse racing events in California include the thoroughbred races in Santa Anita and Los Alamitos, such as the Santa Anita Derby and the Los Alamitos Derby. Other races are the thoroughbred races at Del Mar and Golden Gate Fields and the fair races at Alameda and Sonoma.
Held every April at the Santa Anita Park horse racing course in Arcadia, the Santa Anita Derby is one of the most important horse races on the West Coast and features 3-year-old thoroughbred horses. The winning horses from this race have gone on to clinch the Kentucky Derby title seven times in the past, as of 2015. Started in 1935, the race carries a purse of $1 million.
Inaugurated in 1964, the Los Alamitos Derby also features 3-year-old thoroughbreds and carries a purse of $350,000. It is held yearly in July at the Los Alamitos Race Course in Los Alamitos, California.
