Safety equipment should include a face shield or safety glasses; a form of hearing protection, such as ear plugs or noise-cancelling head phones; a dust mask or respirator; and a sharpening stone as dull blades can cause injury.

Useful shaping tools include a round rasp, flat rasp and wood chisels of varying size, and joining tools include hammers, straight and Phillips-head screwdrivers, and a nail set, along with clamps of varying types.
