The terrorist attacks of 9/11 occurred in the year 2001. President George W. Bush was less than eight months into his first term when 19 Islamic terrorists orchestrated attacks on the United States on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001.
The first signs of disaster surfaced at 8:45 a.m. when an American Airlines jetliner crashed into the north tower of New York's World Trade Center around the 80th floor. Any thoughts of the incident being accidental ended 18 minutes later when a United Airlines jet hit the south tower. Both towers soon collapsed. An hour after the first crash, another American Airlines plane hit the Pentagon. Shortly afterward, a second United Airlines plane crashed in a Pennsylvania field, believed to have been forced down by the passengers and crew in an attempt to thwart another disaster.
