The Battle of Oriskany did not have a clear winner as the Americans kept the battlefield under their control when the Indians that were fighting the British withdrew; however, the British kept the American relief column away and therefore the British are usually considered the victors. The Battle of Oriskany was a bloody war with 15 percent of the British soldiers injured or killed and approximately 50 percent of the American soldiers injured or killed.
The Battle at Oriskany, also referred to as the Battle at Oriska, took place on August 6th, 1777 during the Revolutionary War. General Nicholas Herkimer led the American militiamen while St. Leger led the British. Herkimer died 10 days after the battle from wounds he received during battle.
