Otto Von Bismarck's biggest achievement was the unification of Germany, but he also modernized the government, law and education to reflect the times they were living in. Germany was the first country to offer any kind of social welfare program as well, thanks to Bismark's leadership.
During his time as Prime Minister, Bismark allied himself with numerous groups to advance his ideals for the country. One such group was the National Liberals, with whom he worked to create both civil and criminal codes along with adopting a gold standard. Bismark also moved the country towards free trade while allied with this group. Though not all of the moves he made were welcome or popular, like his move against organized religion, especially the Catholic Church.
