The main accomplishments of Kublai Khan were the reunification of China, creation of a provincial administrative division, inception of a paper currency system, modernization and expansion of trade with the West and the promotion of arts and literature. Kublai Khan was the grandson of the famous Mongol conqueror, Genghis Khan.
Kublai Khan was proclaimed "Great Khan" in 1260 when he defeated his younger brother, Arigh Boki. Following his victory, he established the Yuan Dynasty and crowned himself as emperor. He chose Beijing as his capital. It took Kublai Khan 20 years to consolidate China under the Mongol Empire. He died on February 18, 1294.
