The Nez Perce Indian tribes, who lived in what are now the states of Idaho, Oregon and Washington, ate a diet of primarily fish, roots and plants supplemented by large game meat such as elk, moose, bear and buffalo. The most commonly eaten fish was salmon, but lampreys and whitefish were also part of the Nez Perce diet. Tribal villages were often set-up near streams or rivers with dwellings surrounding the community's council meeting hall and sweat lodge.
The Nez Perce Indians collected a variety of roots to last them through the winter season, including camas bulbs, bitterroot, potatoes and wild carrots. Blackberries, wild strawberries, elderberries, gooseberries, sunflower seeds and pine nuts were also gathered.
