Some famous captains in the American Civil War include Confederate Army captain William Quantrill and Captain George S. James of the South Carolina Artillery. Quantrill was known for guerrilla warfare and launching brutal attacks on Union forces. James fired the first shot at Fort Sumter, beginning the Civil War.
Quantrill's most famed attack occurred in 1863, when he led a force of 450 guerrilla fighters in an assault against the Union stronghold of Lawrence, Kansas. He set the town on fire and killed 200 men.
After Fort Sumter, James was promoted to Union major and then lieutenant colonel. He was killed during battle in 1862.
