Some famous captains in the American Civil War include Confederate Army captain William Quantrill and Captain George S. James of the South Carolina Artillery. Quantrill's most famed attack occurred in 1863, when he led a force of 450 guerrilla fighters in an assault against the Union stronghold of Lawrence, Kansas. He set the town on fire and killed 200 men.
