The craftsmen of the Shang Dynasty (1600 -1046 BC) were known for their skill and artistry in producing artifacts made from bronze. Many of the bronze pieces made during the Shang Dynasty are surprisingly heavy and indicate that a high level of craftsmanship and technology existed at the time.
Intricate carved designs can be found on the surfaces of some of the pieces made during this period. Both imaginary and real animal forms, placed against spiral designs, can be seen in the bronze surface carvings. A little less than 100 years ago, the existence of the Shang Dynasty was not much more than a legend but, in 1928, excavations and scientific study of the last capital city of the Shang Dynasty began in the city of Anyang in Henan province.
