After Hitler's attack on Poland, Germany continued to attack other countries, conquering most of Europe and North Africa. In 1941, Hitler ordered an invasion of the Soviet Union, but the attempt failed. Following the entry of the United States into World War II, the German army was forced to become more defensive, and suffered a series of defeats. In 1945, the Soviet Red Army completely surrounded Berlin.
Toward the end of the war during the Battle of Berlin, Hitler married Eva Braun in a small civil ceremony. Less than two days later, the couple committed suicide to avoid being captured by the Red Army. Both bodies were removed from a hidden bunker and burned by the Red Army. Shortly after Hitler's death, Germany surrendered. During World War II, Hitler ordered the Holocaust, based on his view that the Jews were the great enemy of the German people.
