Vietnam is a country located on the continent of Asia. It borders the Gulf of Thailand, Gulf of Tonkin, and South China Sea and the countries of China, Cambodia and Laos. The climate features a southern area that is tropical, while the northern lands are monsoonal.
The country's size rivals the state of New Mexico, and it's the 66th largest country in the world. The country's official language is Vietnamese, with English being the second most spoken language. Major cities in the country include Ho Chi Minh, Can Tho, Haiphon and Hanoi, the capitol. The predominant religions of the country include Buddhism and Catholicism. Vietnam's main exports include rice, seafood, crude oil and shoes. It's cuisine is a mixture of Chinese and Thai influences with an emphasis on seafood, fruits and vegetables.
Although achieving its independence in 1954, the Geneva Accord of the same year split the country in two. Armed conflict quickly followed the split. During the late 1950s through the early 1970s, Vietnam was the site of a civil war involving the pro-communist North against the pro-American South. Following the cease-fire agreement of 1973, the United States withdrew its forces and the North army quickly took over the South.
