Sparta is located in Greece, in the prefecture of Lakonia in the Evrotas River Valley. The city is located at the site of the ancient city-state of Sparta. The population of the city as of Greece's 2011 census was 17,408.
Ancient Sparta was a society that placed importance on military service and loyalty to the city-state. It reached a high level of power after the Peloponnesian War, which ended in 404 B.C. with Sparta defeating its rival, Athens.
Modern-day Sparta was established on October 20, 1834. It is the capital and cultural center of Lakonia, with wide streets and large squares. The city is surrounded by Mount Taygetos and the Parnonas mountain range.
