Richard and Mildred Loving are no longer alive. Mildred Loving died from pneumonia on May 2, 2008 at age 68. Richard Loving was killed in a car accident in June 1975 at age 41.
Richard and Mildred Loving were civil rights activists during the 1960s who successfully challenged Virginia's ban on interracial marriage. The couple had been sentenced to a year in prison for violating the state's Racial Integrity Act of 1924. With the help of the America Civil Liberties Union, the couple defeated the ban in 1967 in the Supreme Court, in the landmark case of Loving v. Virginia.
