The attack on Pearl Harbor took place on Dec. 7, 1941. The United States declared war on Japan the following day. The war with Japan lasted until the Japanese unconditional surrender on Aug. 14, 1945. Prior to the surrender, the United States detonated two nuclear bombs on Japan on Aug. 6, 1945 and Aug. 9, 1945.
