President Barack Obama is a member of the Democratic Party. The Democratic Party focuses on communal welfare, in contrast to the Republican Party, which focuses on individual rights.
Both parties were founded in the 19th century. Today, the Democratic Party continues to focus on social welfare, which the Republican Party thinks comes at a cost to individual freedom. For instance, most Democrats support health care initiatives like the Affordable Care Act. However, most Republicans think this act, and especially the mandate for individuals to purchase health care, is an overreach of federal authority. The Republicans traditionally push for a small federal government, while Democrats often push for social welfare programs run by the federal government.
