The 44th president of the United States, Barack Obama, turned 53 on Aug. 4, 2014. He was born in Hawaii on Aug. 4, 1961, to an American mother and Kenyan father. He was first elected to the office of president at the age of 47.
President Obama graduated from Columbia University in 1983 with a degree in political science. He entered Harvard Law School in 1988 and graduated magna cum laude in 1991. While there, he became the first African-American editor of the Harvard Law Review. He ran for and won a seat in the Illinois state senate in 1996. He ran for the U.S. Senate in 2004 and was sworn in as a U.S. Senator at the age of 44.
