The CSS Hunley was a Confederate submarine used in the American Civil War. It was the first submarine to successfully sink an enemy ship during combat. On February 17, 1864, the Hunley was damaged and sank to the bottom of the ocean.

The submarine was discovered in Charleston Harbor in 1995. It was raised from the water and taken to the Warren Lasch Conservation Center on August 8, 2000. Over 1,500 artifacts from the CSS Hunley have been discovered.
