Martin Luther King, Jr., was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on January 15th, 1929, to Michael King, Sr., and Alberta Williams King. His birth name was Michael King, Jr. King died on April 4, 1968, after being shot by James Earl Ray.
With family roots in Atlanta, King grew up the son and grandson of Baptist ministers of the Ebenezer Baptist church. He, like his father, took the name Martin Luther in honor of the German Protestant religious leader. He attended Booker T. Washington High School in Atlanta and, at the age of 15, entered Morehouse College, also in Atlanta, where he earned a degree in Sociology.
