Estimates put the number of Vietnamese killed at around 3.3 million, including civilians and army casualties from both sides. The exact number is not known as the Vietnamese did not keep complete records at the time.
This figure includes around 310,000 army casualties from South Vietnam, 950,765 army casualties from North Vietnam and nearly two million civilians from both sides of the divide. These figures are estimates made after the war by both Vietnamese authorities and Senate committees from the United States under pressure from Senator Edward Kennedy. The figures are extrapolations from the number of hospital admissions of war casualties.
