A total of 2,996 people died during the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. This total includes 2,606 deaths at the World Trade Center in New York City, 125 deaths at the Pentagon in Washington D.C., 246 passengers and crew on the four airplanes and the 19 hijackers.
Of the 2,996 deaths on Sept. 11, 2001, 1,762 were residents of New York and 674 were residents of New Jersey. The fatalities at the North Tower of the World Trade Center numbered 1,402, while 614 died at the South Tower. The deaths include 343 fire fighters, 23 police officers and 37 Port Authority police officers.
