Jefferson Davis had six children with his second wife Varina. Among the four sons and two daughters, only the daughters lived past 21 years old, and only one married.
The couple's first child, Samuel Emory, was born in 1852 and died a month before his second birthday. The first daughter, Margaret Howell, was born in 1855. She was the only child to marry and the only one to outlive her parents.
Three sons followed: Jefferson, Jr., Joseph Evan and William Howell were born in 1857, 1859 and 1861, respectively. Joseph broke his neck from a fall and died in 1864, William died from typhoid in 1872, and Jefferson passed away in 1878 from yellow fever.
The last child of Jefferson and Varina Davis, a daughter, was born in 1864. Named Varina Ann, she was called "Winnie." She died in 1898.
