What Was a Major Result of the Reconstruction Period?

A major result of the Reconstruction period in American history was the dominance of the Democratic party in the South. By pandering to racism and Southern pride, the Democrats were able to further demonize the Republican party and win the majority of white male votes.

Following the Civil War in 1866, the Southern states were forced by the Republican-controlled Congress to accept the Thirteenth and Fourteenth amendments, which gave black Americans the voting rights and freedom. Over the next decade, Democrats colluded with white supremacists organizations such as the Klu Klux Klan to legally and illegally remove Republican officials from their offices and terrorize black and white voters with black sympathies.
